Spring blooms, summer festivals or crisp golden autumns — here's how to pick the right season for your European trip.
Europe rewards travellers in every season, but each one offers a different experience. Late spring (April–June) brings mild weather, blossoming gardens and thinner crowds than peak summer. July and August are warmest and liveliest, ideal for the Alps and northern countries, but expect higher prices and busy attractions. September and October — often called the shoulder season — bring golden light, harvest festivals and far more relaxed cities.
For the Mediterranean — Italy, Greece, Spain — May, June and September are the sweet spot, avoiding the searing midsummer heat. For Switzerland and the Alps, July to September gives ice-free trails and open mountain railways. For Christmas markets and a chance of snow, December turns cities like Vienna and Prague into something magical.
Fares from India spike during summer holidays and Christmas. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead secures the best prices and availability, and a flexible travel window of a few days can save a meaningful amount on flights.
